The Outboard Engine Distributors Association (OEDA) introduced a welcome marine jobs initiative this week. The launch of its Job Ready training course aimed at encouraging students to consider a career in the recreational boating industry as a marine technician. The course was held at one of its members training facilities, Mercury Marine, in Dandenong, Victoria. Students were able to see, touch and experience the tools, systems and workplace expectations that form part of a career as a marine technician.
The OEDA initiative was developed by a working group consisting of the training managers of OEDA’s five members (Honda, Mercury, Suzuki, Tohatsu and Yamaha) along with BIA Ltd and BIA Vic over the last 12 months. The working group focused on creating a practical, engaging course that assists students build confidence and understand what a future in the recreational boating industry can look like.
BIA Ltd’s Shane Wilson attended the course at Mercury Marine and delivered the Work Health and Safety component through the Marine Card program.
Following the successful Dandenong delivery, future events are proposed in Sydney, New South Wales and Brisbane, Queensland.
By connecting students with industry, workplaces, and practical learning, the OEDA initiative is helping create clearer entry points into marine mechanical careers and supporting the development of skilled talent for the future of the Australian recreational boating industry.
BIA Ltd is delighted to support Job Ready as part of its suite of activities which includes advocating for a higher profile for marine mechanics in its Marine Jobs program and using its role on the National Job Skills Council AUSMASA to improve recognition of marine mechanical issues in the AUSAMA national strategy for jobs, has hosted a meeting of this National Jobs & Skills body at the Coomera Marine Precinct, securing AUSMASA support to press for a formal review of Cert III Marine Mechanical syllabus to meet current and emerging industry needs.
