BIA Board of Directors

The Boating Industry Association (BIA) continues to chart a dynamic course for Australia’s marine sector, with recent developments highlighting its commitment to growth, innovation, and engagement.

The BIA board members have just wrapped up their annual strategy meeting, this year held in Adelaide. A pivotal meeting that sets the tone for the year ahead and enables the opportunity to assess current challenges, explore emerging opportunities, and refine the association’s long-term goals in support of 700 member organisations.

In South Australia, the ongoing Algal Bloom outbreak is having an impact on all marine businesses in this part of Australia and is framing discussions that emphasises the need for greater collaboration, the importance of advocacy, and the evolving needs of recreational and commercial boating communities.

The BIA’s job initiative, Marine Jobs, in partnership with Men of Business (MOB) and TAFE Queensland, proudly participated in the first Marine Job Ready trade taster program. This introductory short course is designed to inspire young people to consider careers in the marine sector while supporting skill development and workforce sustainability. Well done to all the participants and to the businesses that attended the gathering to celebrate the achievements of the attendees. The collaboration between industry, education, and community organisations reflects a shared vision to nurture the next generation of marine professionals and help address skill shortages across the sector.

The BIA’s recently released National Recreational Boating Statement has been met with enthusiastic feedback from stakeholders and government representatives. The statement outlines key trends, including the projection that boating participation will exceed six million Australians by 2030, with over $20 billion spent annually on boating in all forms of watercraft. It also highlights the social and economic benefits of boating, the need for improved infrastructure, and the importance of broadening diversity. By providing a comprehensive snapshot of the industry, the statement serves as a vital tool for policymakers and investors, reinforcing the value of recreational boating in Australian life.

Planning is well underway for the November 2025 Sydney International On-Water Boat Show, set to take place at Darling Harbour from 13 to 16 November. We expect to be releasing details of some of the key exhibitors already onboard in the coming days.

Together, these initiatives reflect the BIA’s proactive leadership and its unwavering commitment to fostering a thriving, inclusive, and forward-looking marine industry.

See you out there,
Andrew Fielding
