BIA members have a primary desire to sell boats and boating accessories. Our members also adhere to our code of ethics which is about building trust and confidence with the public.

That idea of confidence is central to the work we are doing to promote safe vessels by helping people to find their dream boat. The purchase of a new or used boat is often the buyer’s culmination of a period of research and anticipation. It is also a time for people to ensure their investment and safety by considering, where and when appropriate, a professional marine survey.

The marine surveying industry offers a variety of services, which may seem overwhelming to first-time buyers. The Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS) can be a trusted resource. With over 400 qualified surveyors throughout Australia, AIMS can connect people with the right professional for specific needs.

The MoU we signed earlier this year with AIMS is a great partnership. As Eric Perez CEO AIMS said in the Shipshape magazine: “The partnership between BIA, the peak industry body in Australia that represents the interests of boating, and the AIMS, the peak industry body for Marine Surveyors in Australasia, is a win for recreation vessel owners. More importantly, it is a win for the safety of recreational vessel owners.”

It’s important to understand the different types of surveys available. A pre-purchase survey provides a comprehensive evaluation of the vessel’s condition, including its features, any past repairs and potential future maintenance requirements. This differs from an insurance survey, which primarily focuses on assessing insurability for insurance companies.

While a pre-purchase survey represents an additional investment, its detailed report provides invaluable peace of mind. When selecting a surveyor, it is a good idea to prioritise their qualifications and experience. Inquire about their professional background and marine surveying accreditations. Additionally, determine if they offer mechanical inspections as part of their survey.

Professional Indemnity Insurance is another essential factor. Verifying the surveyor’s insurance coverage safeguards you in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Armed with this knowledge, you can confidently navigate the marine survey process and select a qualified surveyor who aligns with your specific needs where peace of mind is paramount.

The AIMS membership encompasses a wide range of marine surveying expertise, catering to various vessels. Members include those specialising in international shipping, domestic commercial vessels, superyachts and recreational craft. Many surveyors have a background in maritime careers, ensuring a deep understanding of vessel operation and maintenance.

The BIA partnership with AIMS will help improve awareness of, and access to, trusted marine surveyors to support the recreational boating and light commercial vessel sectors. We have pathway documents as written by several AIMS and BIA Members, for people interested in pursuing a career as a Marine Surveyor, we can put you in touch with these professionals to share career information. More information will be available on the Marine Jobs platform in due course.

As our members know, the BIA is committed to the promotion of safe, responsible and enjoyable boating. We believe a great day on the water is enhanced with public confidence in boats that are being bought and sold. This is a theme we are making central to a new Responsible Boat Owner campaign that is in development in collaboration with maritime regulators across the nation.
