As a student heading into the final years of his school education at Redcliffe High, Jake Walker’s passion for eventually working in the marine industry led him to speaking with his school’s Industry Liaison Officer, Claire Daly.  Fortunately for Jake, Claire could sense his enthusiasm and was prepared to think outside the square to find an appropriate school-based traineeship.

Clair’s persistence and collaboration with Busy at Work and Professional and Technical Training Australia (PATA), led to a school-based Certificate III traineeship being developed.

Richard Barrett, Scarborough Marina General Manager, when discussing the discovery of this new course said, “As you can imagine, we were very pleased to discover this and very excited by the prospect of hosting Jake in support of this fantastic initiative, fully committing to Jake and the stakeholders responsible for putting it together”.

Shortly after, Jake commenced his traineeship at Scarborough Marina and is now loving the days that he is working onsite. BIA Business Development Manager Andrew Fielding recently visited Jake and congratulated him on commencing his training.  He also heard from Jake about how much he is enjoying learning the vast array of jobs that are needed to make a shipyard run successfully.

Upon hearing the news of this exciting new traineeship and in support of Scarborough Marina and Jake, the BIA was delighted to have assisted Jake with his Marine Card training.

The hard work and dedication of everyone involved, including Jake, shows what great opportunities can be realised for young people interested in a career in the marine industry. Collaboration such as this is exactly what the BIA recognises as the only way in achieving a successful future for Australia’s marine industry.

Jake has already proven to be a valued member of the team at Scarborough Marina, very quickly showing his commitment to his training and his new workplace.  Leading to the opinion of Richard Barrett and his team, that Jake has the potential to become a valued member of our industry with a promising career ahead of him.

Well done Jake!
